Grand Theft Auto 5 (“GTA 5”) is the world’s most expensive video game ever produced, sitting at a development and marketing budget of £170 million, or $265 million.
That’s two-hundred sixty-seven million dollars to produce a game that comes on two DVDs (Xbox 360) or one very, very full Blu-ray disc (PS3.) Star Wars: The Old Republic will fall to second place at an estimated $200 million. In comparison, the next video games on the list of most expensive video games produced include “Grand Theft Auto 4,” “Disney Infinity” and “Red Dead Redemption,” which had a $100 million budget each.
“GTA 5’s” budget also rivals Hollywood blockbuster budgets, such as “Avatar’s” $237 million budget and Disney film “Tangled’s” $260 million budget.
“GTA 5” was developed by Rockstar North, the Edinburgh, Scotland based video game developer formerly known as DMA Design. Rockstar North was also responsible created the original “Grand Theft Auto.”
After Rockstar Games published “Grand Theft Auto 3,” they purchased DMA Design in 2002, renaming it Rockstar North.
Here’s a picture to give you some idea of just how massively GTA V shatters that record.
