Sachin Tendulkar: So Many Firsts & Highests

There is not much we can do to thank this man enough. Even God must be proud to have been associated with him. And it was only fitting that he ended up on the winning side in his last matches across all the formats. This man, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, has given us so many reasons to be happy about. Here are some of the many:

– The first (and only) cricketer to have played 200 Test matches (Of course, it’s a shame if you don’t know that already).

-First player to reach 12,000, 13,000, 14,000 and 15,000 Test runs. And of course, remains the only batsman in the 14,000+ runs category (with 15,921 runs).

-First Indian batsman to surpass the 11,000 runs mark in Tests and the third batsman in the world to do so.

-First batsman to score 8000+ Test runs away from home.

-Highest number of 150+ scores in Test matches (20). 11 of them overseas (again a record).

-Highest number of 50+ innings (119) in his 329 Test innings (again highest, the only player with 300+ innings).

-First cricketer to hit 50 (or even 40) Test centuries. And yes, holds the world record for highest number of Test centuries(51).

-First player to hit 25 Test centuries on foreign soil (29 in total).

-Sachin holds the record for scoring more than 1000 Test runs in a calendar year the most times. He has done it six times-2010 (1562 runs), 2008 (1063 runs), 2002 (1392 runs), 1999 (1088 runs), 2001 (1003 runs) and 1997 (1000 runs).


-First batsman who scored 495 runs in three innings before being dismissed – a world record – his sequence of scores being 241 not out & 60 not out vs Australia at Sydney in January 2004 and 194 not out vs Pakistan at Multan in March 2004. Of course, who can forget those gems.

-Shares 20 century stands with Rahul Dravid – a world record for most century partnerships by any pair, the highest in Tests.
-The first and only player to have recorded 2000 fours (2058) apart from 69 sixes in Test Cricket.

-Holds a record for most international centuries (100) – 51 in Tests and 49 in One Day Internationals – 29 more than Ricky Ponting (71).

-First and only player to have amassed more than 30,000 international runs – 34,357 at an average of 48.52.

-First and only player to have played 450+ ODIs (463 in total)
-First batsman to appear in 400 ODI innings (452 in total, another record).

-Fist player to reach the 10,000, 11,000, 12,000, 13,000, 14,000, 15,000, 16,000, 17,000 and 18,000 runs mark in ODI history. Remains the only player in the 14,000+ ODI runs club (18,426).

-Sachin was the first batsman in World Cricket to reach the 200 runs mark in one innings in an ODI match. Again, who can forget how he demolished Dale Steyn and company en route to his 200*.
-Sachin has the highest number of centuries in ODI cricket, a total of 49 centuries. Of course he was the first to hit 20, 30, and 40 ODI centuries.
-Sachin has the highest number of half-centuries in ODI cricket, a total of 96 half-centuries.
-Highest number of ODI runs in a calendar year: 1,894 ODI runs in 1998.
-Highest number of ODI centuries in a calendar year: 9 ODI centuries in 1998.
-Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly as an opening pair have scored  6,609 runs in 136 matches that includes 21 century partnerships and 23 fifty run partnerships. This is another record that Sachin shares with Ganguly.
-Sachin has scored 2,278 runs at an average of 56.95 in World Cup history(the highest). This includes 6 centuries & 15 fifties with a best score of 152* against Namibia in the 2003 World Cup.
-First player to hit 500 runs in one edition of ODI World Cup (523 in 1996).
-First (and only) player to hit 600 runs in one edition of ODI World Cup (643 in 2003).
-Highest number of the man of the match awards in World cups.
-Sachin has opened the innings 340 times in ODI cricket, which is a record in itself.
-He was the first players to complete the all-round treble of 10000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches.
-Highest number of man of the match awards (62) in the ODIs.
-Highest  number of man of the series awards (17) in ODIs.
-Highest number of 50+ scores in ODI’s – 145 (49 Centuries and 96 Fifties).
-Tendulkar top-scored for India on 129 occasions – most such occasions for any player in ODIs.
-Is the first and only player to have made three scores of 175 or more in ODIs. Is the only player with five scores of 150 or more.
-Holds the record for scoring 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year on most occasions. He did so seven times – 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2007.
-He was the first cricketer to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India’s highest sporting honor only to be followed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
-He remains the first (and only) sportsperson to receive Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
And if I may add, he happens to be the first player to have won millions of hearts, with his talent, his grace, and his humility. Thank You Sachin !!!
